Record-breaking El Capitan climber dies in Sierra Nevada fall

Jacob ‘Jake’ Whisenant died in Sequoia and Kings Canyon wilderness in ‘climbing-related incident’, authorities say

A 30-year-old California climber known for breaking speed records died after falling in the Sierra Nevada wilderness last week, according to authorities.

Jacob “Jake” Whisenant, from Mammoth Lakes, California, died in the Sequoia and Kings Canyon wilderness on 3 August, according to the Tulare county sheriff’s office coroner unit and the National Park Service (NPS).

The NPS said personnel responded to a “climbing-related incident” in the Sequoia and Kings Canyon wilderness on 2 August. Rescue and recovery operations were conducted over two days, and Whisenant was found dead by rangers.

Whisenant was well-known in the climbing community for his record-setting speed ascents in Yosemite national park. Among his accolades is his 2024 climb in El Capitan, known as the “ mecca of modern rock climbing ”, taking a 2,000ft route in two hours, 55 minutes and 32 seconds with his climbing partner Brant Hysell, according to a post by Whisenant.

Whisenant described the feat as “a truly magical day that I’ll never forget” in the social media post.

In May, Whisenant and another climbing partner completed the renowned Nose route twice in a single day.

On Tuesday, Whisenant’s fiancee recalled in an obituary posted online that last week she “received the call that no one ever wants to get about the love of their life”.

“Jake had fallen to his death while climbing a first ascent in Sequoia Kings Canyon,” wrote Emma London. “As dusk turned to night, I was forced to say goodbye to the last day we were both here on Earth.”

Whisenant grew up in the suburbs of the Sonoran Desert in Arizona and later studied environmental studies at the University of California, Santa Barbara, according to London. He picked up composting, surfing and cycling throughout his college years.

“Over the years, his family and friends have consistently shared with me just how stubbornly he committed himself to becoming an expert in every hobby he undertook,” London said. “Jake is remembered by me and the myriad of friends that time and distance could never separate him from.”

A friend who spoke to multiple outlets called his death an “unimaginable loss”.

“Our family is absolutely devastated by this news but find solace in the fact that Jake died doing what he loves in the beautiful Sierra Nevada,” friend Bailee Moore said in an Instagram post .

Moore launched a GoFundMe fundraiser for Whisenant in an effort to “create meaningful memorials in the places he loved.

“Jake Whisenant lived life with a rare sense of purpose,” reads the GoFundMe page. “His passion for climbing was only a small glimpse into the kind of person he was. He will always be remembered for his unwavering respect for nature, for others, and for every moment he was given.”
