What to know about Israel’s election and the key ballot measures for the midterms: Morning Rundown

A road sign stands in front of a large billboard featuring Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu (R) of the Likud party and former military chief and leader of the centrist Yashar party, Gadi Eisenkot, in Ramat Gan on October 20, 2026.
Netanyahu’s fate is on the line in Israel’s first elections since the Oct. 7 attacks. Breaking down the ballot measures to watch in the midterms. And a thrilling divisional showdown in the NFC North.
What to know about Israeli elections as Netanyahu faces a battle for survival
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is facing one of the most significant electoral tests of his decades-long political career.
As voters go to the polls tomorrow, Netanyahu’s party is neck and neck with former Israel Defense Forces Chief of Staff Gadi Eisenkot, his strongest rival in a campaign that has revolved around everything from military conscription to the economy.

Netanyahu has led Israel for nearly 19 of the past 30 years. But this is the first nationwide election since the Oct. 7, 2023, Hamas-led attacks. Many of the prime minister’s opponents believe he has evaded responsibility for the intelligence failures leading up to the attacks and what is widely seen as the security forces’ inadequate response.
The election is also about his personal freedom: Netanyahu is facing long-running criminal cases domestically, which have been dragged out because of his political privileges.
No one party can expect to earn a majority of the Israeli Knesset’s 120 seats. Instead, the country’s leadership will be decided by negotiations to build a governing coalition.
